As a kid, I loved red velvet cake. Little did I know it was just food coloring and artificial flavoring. Red food dye is linked to some major health problems.

The food industry pumps out 15 million pounds of food dye into our food supply. You might not be eating anything with red food dye, but your kids might be.

Food dyes are in foods, such as:
• Baked goods
• Candy
• Pie filling
• Cake frosting
• Cake mix
• Fruit snacks
• Cereals
• Strawberry filling
• Red sodas

Potential symptoms of consuming red food dye:
• Hyperactivity
• Allergies
• Increased risk of cancer
• Increased estrogen
• DNA damage

—————————————————————————————————-
In today’s video, we’ll discuss the top 10 most dangerous foods in the world. Plus we’ll cover a few tips, tricks, and alternatives for each to empower you with the knowledge to make small adjustments that can greatly impact your health and quality of life.

10. Polyunsaturated Vegetable Oils:
Polyunsaturated oils like soybean, corn, sunflower, and canola are unstable and prone to going rancid, leading to an increased risk of heart disease and cancer. Instead, choose more stable oils like extra virgin olive and coconut oil and watch out for polyunsaturated oils in processed foods.

9. Refined Grains:
Refined grains like white flour, white rice, and pasta lack fiber, vitamins, and minerals, causing rapid spikes in blood sugar levels and inflammatory damage which can lead to an increased risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Choose whole grains like almond or pumpkin bread, cauliflower rice, and zucchini noodles.

8. Processed Meats:
Processed meats like salami, ham, hot dogs, and bacon contain nitrates and nitrites which have been linked to stomach and colorectal cancer, and can cause an 18% increased risk of coronary heart disease. Opt for nitrate-free and pasture-raised options, and treat processed meats as an occasional food.

7. Instant Noodles:
Instant noodles contain high amounts of sodium, monosodium glutamate (MSG), and tertiary-butyl hydroquinone (TBHQ), which can cause a variety of health problems including high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke. Choose healthier options like fresh vegetables, rice noodles, and lean meats.

6. Canned Tomatoes:
Canned tomatoes contain bisphenol A (BPA), a chemical that can disrupt hormones and cause a range of health problems. Choose fresh tomatoes or look for BPA-free canned tomatoes.

5. Farmed Salmon:
Farmed salmon are raised in crowded conditions and fed an unnatural diet that can result in higher levels of contaminants like pesticides and antibiotics, which can cause health problems. Choose wild-caught salmon, which is higher in omega-3 fatty acids and lower in contaminants.

4. Margarine:
Margarine is made from vegetable oils that are hydrogenated to create a solid form, which produces trans fats that can raise LDL cholesterol and increase the risk of heart disease. Opt for butter, ghee, or plant-based spreads that are free of trans fats.

3. High-Fructose Corn Syrup:
High-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is a common sweetener found in many processed foods that can cause obesity, diabetes, and other health problems. Choose natural sweeteners like honey, maple syrup, or stevia instead.

2. White Sugar:
White sugar is highly refined and lacks nutrients, causing rapid spikes in blood sugar levels that can lead to inflammation, insulin resistance, and an increased risk of type 2 diabetes. Choose natural sweeteners like honey, maple syrup, or stevia instead.

1. Artificial Sweeteners:
Artificial sweeteners like aspartame, sucralose, and saccharin are used in many diet sodas and sugar-free products and can cause headaches, dizziness, and other health problems. Choose natural sweeteners or reduce your sugar intake altogether.

Dangerous Foods Your Cat Should Never Eat

Lifestyle No Comments »

In this video, we will talk about 14 human foods that are toxic to cats.

Chocolate
Chocolate is a delicious treat for humans, but it is toxic to cats because it contains a substance called theobromine. Humans break down and metabolize theobromine easily, but cats don’t.
Milk, Cheese, and Dairy Products
Although some adult cats may still produce some lactase enzyme, most felines are lactose intolerant, meaning that cow milk and dairy products such as like cheese or cream can upset their stomachs. They may experience anything from mild to severe gastrointestinal discomfort – diarrhea, loose stools, vomiting, stomach pain, or gas.
Salt
Most human food contains too much salt, and salt isn’t recommended for cats.
Eating too much salt can lead to a condition known as salt poisoning. It causes water deprivation in pets and leads to symptoms like vomiting, fever, diarrhea, excessive thirst, and tremors. In severe cases, it may even cause death.
Citrus fruits
Citrus fruits such as oranges, lemons, limes, and grapefruits contain essential oils and citric acid that can cause problems in cats.
Cats can also experience skin irritation if their skin comes into contact with citrus fruits. And even simply inhaling citrus essential oils, or any other essential oil, can cause problem to cats.
Raw or undercooked meat, eggs and fish
Raw fish, raw eggs and raw meat can contain bacteria like Salmonella and E. coli that can be harmful to pets. Cooking to a safe temperature kills off those harmful bacteria as well as any possible viruses.
Bones
Cooked bones are a serious danger to felines because they can splinter and get stuck in a cat’s throat or stomach.
Avocados
Avocados contain a toxic substance called persin, which is perfectly safe for human, but can cause serious health problems — even death — in many animals.
Grapes and Raisins
Cats should never eat grapes and raisins. These fruits are known to be extremely toxic to cats. Grape toxicity in cats can cause serious kidney damage that can lead to sudden kidney failure, which can be fatal.
Hotdogs
Your feline friend would probably love to chow down on a hotdog. But is that a good idea? Many hotdogs contain ingredients that are not good for cats, such as sugars, artificial sweeteners, and unhealthy saturated fats that they cannot process. Hotdogs also contain seasonings, such as onion powder and garlic, which are toxic to cats. And the biggest problem with hotdogs is salt.
In fact, all processed meats are unsafe for your feline. These products contain a significant amount of salt, fat, chemical preservatives, and added spices which are bad for your cat’s stomach
Tuna
Most cats love tuna to a fault. Tuna is very tasty, perhaps much tastier than your cat’s kibble. However, cats can become addicted to tuna. Some felines, when given tuna on a regular basis, will start turning up their nose at their regular cat food, hoping you will give more tuna instead.
Macadamia Nuts
Macadamia nuts are very toxic to cats. These nuts are often found in baked goods, cakes, cookies, muffins, and even trail mix. Make sure to keep these foods away from your pet.
Caffeine
Any beverage that contains a hint of caffeine is a big no-no for your cat.
Caffeine over-stimulates a cat’s nervous system. It causes their heart rate to increase to a dangerous level, and their blood pressure skyrocket.
Alcohol
Alcohol exists in many products we wouldn’t realize, such as mouth wash, perfume, cleaning products, and hand sanitizers. Make sure to keep them out of reach. Even the smallest amount of alcohol, such as found in cough syrups, medications, and raw bread dough, are poisonous to cats.
Raw Yeast Dough
If you’ve ever made bread from scratch, then you know that dough has to rise. When a cat eats bread dough, the yeast in that dough can expand in your cat’s belly and cause a lot of pain and bloating. This can cause a cat’s stomach to twist, which can turn into a medical emergency. There is also a risk of alcohol poisoning since yeast produces alcohol during the fermenting process. Make sure raw dough is out of your feline’s reach at all times.

Toxic amounts of vitamin D spur dog food recall

Lifestyle No Comments »

(5 Dec 2018) Elm Pet Foods is the latest maker of dog food to issue a recall over elevated levels of vitamin D, which can cause kidney failure at high enough levels.
Dr. Tracey Maione, DVM, medical director of Chicago’s Oz Animal Hospital tells The Associated Press that dogs need vitamin D.
“Unfortunately. what’s happened is an excessive level of vitamin D has been found in these foods,” she said. “In dogs, excessive levels of vitamin D are an issue because of how they’re metabolized in their liver.”
Similar recalls have been issued by ANF Inc., Sunshine Mills Inc., Natural Life Pet Products, and Nutrisca over the last month.
Elm and others urge consumers to either dispose of or return several types of chicken and chickpea recipe dog food. They also urge dog owners to contact their veterinarian if the food was eaten.
Symptoms of vitamin D toxicity include vomiting, weight loss, increased urination and excessive thirst.

Understanding Temperature Control (HACCP Lesson – Part 06)

Lifestyle No Comments »

All food can potentially carry harmful bacteria, but some foods are especially conducive to promoting bacterial growth. Several factors affect the rate at which bacteria grow in food, but time and temperature are two of the most easily-controlled factors in a food service kitchen. Food that requires time and temperature control for safety is referred to as TCS food. TCS food has several attributes that make it ideal for bacterial growth, such as moisture, protein, and a neutral or slightly acidic pH.

TCS food can be whole food, or it can be food that has already been prepared, like a casserole. TCS food can be from animal or plant sources. Foods that are considered TCS include:

Milk and other dairy products
Meat (beef, pork, lamb) or poultry (chicken, turkey)
Fish and shellfish
Eggs
Baked potatoes
Plant-based foods that have been heat-treated (cooked rice, beans, or vegetables)
Soy foods (tofu, textured soy protein/meat alternatives)
Sliced or cut fruits or vegetables (e.g. cantaloupe or melons, leafy greens, tomatoes, etc.)
Bean sprouts and sprout seeds
Untreated garlic-and-oil mixtures

The Danger Zone is a temperature range in which bacteria grow and multiple at its fastest. This ranges from 20 – 45 °C (68 – 113 °F). Bacteria can, however, grow and survive between 5 – 65 °C (41 – 149 °F). But the most common food-related bacteria grow at their best in the danger zone.
