Dangerous Foods Your Cat Should Never Eat

Lifestyle No Comments »

In this video, we will talk about 14 human foods that are toxic to cats.

Chocolate
Chocolate is a delicious treat for humans, but it is toxic to cats because it contains a substance called theobromine. Humans break down and metabolize theobromine easily, but cats don’t.
Milk, Cheese, and Dairy Products
Although some adult cats may still produce some lactase enzyme, most felines are lactose intolerant, meaning that cow milk and dairy products such as like cheese or cream can upset their stomachs. They may experience anything from mild to severe gastrointestinal discomfort – diarrhea, loose stools, vomiting, stomach pain, or gas.
Salt
Most human food contains too much salt, and salt isn’t recommended for cats.
Eating too much salt can lead to a condition known as salt poisoning. It causes water deprivation in pets and leads to symptoms like vomiting, fever, diarrhea, excessive thirst, and tremors. In severe cases, it may even cause death.
Citrus fruits
Citrus fruits such as oranges, lemons, limes, and grapefruits contain essential oils and citric acid that can cause problems in cats.
Cats can also experience skin irritation if their skin comes into contact with citrus fruits. And even simply inhaling citrus essential oils, or any other essential oil, can cause problem to cats.
Raw or undercooked meat, eggs and fish
Raw fish, raw eggs and raw meat can contain bacteria like Salmonella and E. coli that can be harmful to pets. Cooking to a safe temperature kills off those harmful bacteria as well as any possible viruses.
Bones
Cooked bones are a serious danger to felines because they can splinter and get stuck in a cat’s throat or stomach.
Avocados
Avocados contain a toxic substance called persin, which is perfectly safe for human, but can cause serious health problems β€” even death β€” in many animals.
Grapes and Raisins
Cats should never eat grapes and raisins. These fruits are known to be extremely toxic to cats. Grape toxicity in cats can cause serious kidney damage that can lead to sudden kidney failure, which can be fatal.
Hotdogs
Your feline friend would probably love to chow down on a hotdog. But is that a good idea? Many hotdogs contain ingredients that are not good for cats, such as sugars, artificial sweeteners, and unhealthy saturated fats that they cannot process. Hotdogs also contain seasonings, such as onion powder and garlic, which are toxic to cats. And the biggest problem with hotdogs is salt.
In fact, all processed meats are unsafe for your feline. These products contain a significant amount of salt, fat, chemical preservatives, and added spices which are bad for your cat’s stomach
Tuna
Most cats love tuna to a fault. Tuna is very tasty, perhaps much tastier than your cat’s kibble. However, cats can become addicted to tuna. Some felines, when given tuna on a regular basis, will start turning up their nose at their regular cat food, hoping you will give more tuna instead.
Macadamia Nuts
Macadamia nuts are very toxic to cats. These nuts are often found in baked goods, cakes, cookies, muffins, and even trail mix. Make sure to keep these foods away from your pet.
Caffeine
Any beverage that contains a hint of caffeine is a big no-no for your cat.
Caffeine over-stimulates a cat’s nervous system. It causes their heart rate to increase to a dangerous level, and their blood pressure skyrocket.
Alcohol
Alcohol exists in many products we wouldn’t realize, such as mouth wash, perfume, cleaning products, and hand sanitizers. Make sure to keep them out of reach. Even the smallest amount of alcohol, such as found in cough syrups, medications, and raw bread dough, are poisonous to cats.
Raw Yeast Dough
If you’ve ever made bread from scratch, then you know that dough has to rise. When a cat eats bread dough, the yeast in that dough can expand in your cat’s belly and cause a lot of pain and bloating. This can cause a cat’s stomach to twist, which can turn into a medical emergency. There is also a risk of alcohol poisoning since yeast produces alcohol during the fermenting process. Make sure raw dough is out of your feline’s reach at all times.

Toxic amounts of vitamin D spur dog food recall

Lifestyle No Comments »

(5 Dec 2018) Elm Pet Foods is the latest maker of dog food to issue a recall over elevated levels of vitamin D, which can cause kidney failure at high enough levels.
Dr. Tracey Maione, DVM, medical director of Chicago’s Oz Animal Hospital tells The Associated Press that dogs need vitamin D.
“Unfortunately. what’s happened is an excessive level of vitamin D has been found in these foods,” she said. “In dogs, excessive levels of vitamin D are an issue because of how they’re metabolized in their liver.”
Similar recalls have been issued by ANF Inc., Sunshine Mills Inc., Natural Life Pet Products, and Nutrisca over the last month.
Elm and others urge consumers to either dispose of or return several types of chicken and chickpea recipe dog food. They also urge dog owners to contact their veterinarian if the food was eaten.
Symptoms of vitamin D toxicity include vomiting, weight loss, increased urination and excessive thirst.

Understanding Temperature Control (HACCP Lesson – Part 06)

Lifestyle No Comments »

All food can potentially carry harmful bacteria, but some foods are especially conducive to promoting bacterial growth. Several factors affect the rate at which bacteria grow in food, but time and temperature are two of the most easily-controlled factors in a food service kitchen. Food that requires time and temperature control for safety is referred to as TCS food. TCS food has several attributes that make it ideal for bacterial growth, such as moisture, protein, and a neutral or slightly acidic pH.

TCS food can be whole food, or it can be food that has already been prepared, like a casserole. TCS food can be from animal or plant sources. Foods that are considered TCS include:

Milk and other dairy products
Meat (beef, pork, lamb) or poultry (chicken, turkey)
Fish and shellfish
Eggs
Baked potatoes
Plant-based foods that have been heat-treated (cooked rice, beans, or vegetables)
Soy foods (tofu, textured soy protein/meat alternatives)
Sliced or cut fruits or vegetables (e.g. cantaloupe or melons, leafy greens, tomatoes, etc.)
Bean sprouts and sprout seeds
Untreated garlic-and-oil mixtures

The Danger Zone is a temperature range in which bacteria grow and multiple at its fastest. This ranges from 20 – 45 Β°C (68 – 113 Β°F). Bacteria can, however, grow and survive between 5 – 65 Β°C (41 – 149 Β°F). But the most common food-related bacteria grow at their best in the danger zone.

Foods harmful for dogs
Foods That can kill Dogs
Video Rating: / 5

In this video, we will talk about 12 human foods that dogs can enjoy. From peanut butter to bread and yogurt, stay tuned to find out more.

Peanut butter
The good news is that regular peanut butter with no added sugar and salt is safe for dogs to have as a treat. It only becomes dangerous when the peanut butter contains xylitol, which is a sugar substitute found in many sugar-free products. Xylitol is extremely poisonous to dogs.
Dairy products
Dogs can have milk. But be cautious. Some dogs are lactose-intolerant, which means their gut can’t digest milk well. A few tablespoons of cow’s milk or goat milk can be a nice reward for your canine.
If your dog likes dairy products, you can give them plain yogurt instead, which is typically easier to digest than regular milk.
Bread
Plain white and wheat bread is generally safe for dogs to eat in moderation.
However, not all breads are harmless. Some breads contain toxic ingredients that should never be fed to dogs.
Garlic or onions, for example, are ingredients found in bread that can be toxic to canines, causing serious side effects such as vomiting, diarrhea, and collapse. And some breads contain nuts, seeds or xylitol, which appeal to humans for their flavor and health benefits, but can cause problems for dogs. And the biggest danger comes from raisins. Raisins are highly toxic for dogs and are sometimes found in breads and baked goods. Even a few raisins can be dangerous. So always be sure to double-check the ingredients first.
Watermelon
It’s safe for dogs to eat watermelon with a couple of precautions. First, seeds could cause an intestinal blockage, so make sure you remove them. It’s also a good idea to remove the rind because it can cause a gastrointestinal upset.
Watermelon is a great source of vitamins, and is a very nutritional treat to feed your dog. The fruit has high water content and it works great to hydrate your dog in a hot summer day.
Other fruits such as blueberries, cantaloupe, strawberries, bananas, and mangoes also make excellent snacks as they are full of vitamins and minerals, and they are high in fiber too.
Likewise, apples are an excellent source of vitamins A and C, as well as fiber for your dog. They are low in protein and fat, making them the perfect snack for senior dogs. Just be sure to remove the seeds and core first.
Avocado and grapes should never be given to dogs though, as they have been proven to be very toxic for canines.
Chicken
Chicken is safe for dogs. Most vets warn against raw chicken from the grocery store because of the risk of salmonella or other bacterial contamination.
Feed your dog cooked chicken without any seasoning, onions or garlic.
And be sure to take cooked chicken off the bone. Cooked chicken bones splinter easily, which can cause choking or a gastrointestinal tract puncture
Eggs
Eggs are safe and beneficial for dogs. Essentially the entire egg, including the eggshell, can be nutritious for your pet. Most vets recommend cooking eggs before feeding them to your canine. Raw eggs can be a source of Salmonella.
White rice
Dogs can eat rice. In fact, many veterinarians recommend rice as a great food for dogs suffering from common gastrointestinal issues. One of the reasons white rice is the chosen grain for a dog with an upset stomach is that it’s easy to digest, quick to prepare, and low in fiber. Rice also contains soluble fiber which helps to stabilize and bind the stool.
Pork
Unfortunately, ham and bacon aren’t good for dogs.
Bacon is an incredibly fatty food with a high salt content, which can prove to be too much for a dog’s stomach to handle. Ham also has a dangerously high salt content.
However, not all pork meat is completely off the doggy menu.
Bone Broth
Bone broth is made by simmering bones in water for a long time. It contains plenty of nutrients that can be beneficial to your dog. Bone broth is also packed with minerals and vitamin and most importantly, dogs actually love its flavor. It helps your dog live their happiest, healthiest life.
Carrots
Want your canine to have strong teeth? Give them a carrot. Crunching on this orange veggie is fun and it helps remove the plaque from the teeth. This healthy, low-calorie snack is a great source of vitamin A for dogs, and it builds immunity, promotes good health, and gives your pet a healthy skin.
Coconut meat
Coconut meat is just as healthy as the coconut oil. The meat of the fruit is packed with healthy carbs, fats, and proteins that build strong muscles and generate energy to fuel our canine companions.
Coconut is also rich in vitamins, minerals, and fiber, and is praised for its ability to improve a dog’s skin and coat.
Pineapple
Pineapple is not only safe for your dog to eat, but packs a nutrient-dense punch. It’s a tangy fruit that’s filled with minerals and vitamins that help support your dog’s health.

Dangerous Foods Your Dog Should Never Eat

There are many stories of dogs dying from eating human foods.

Here are the foods that your dog should never eat

11. Apple Seeds
Apple is good for dogs. but make sure you remove the seeds. The apple’s seeds are known to contain a natural chemical called Amygdaline. The chemical releases cyanide when digested and enter the dog’s bloodstream. Don’t fret, however, if they mistakenly eat one or two of the seed as the chemical can only be injurious if it is found in large quantity.

10. Avocado
Avocado is one of the fruits that may require the attention of a vet if eaten by your dog. Avocado contains a fungicidal toxin called Persin that can cause diarrhea, nausea or vomiting and heart congestion. The Avocado’s pit is loaded with Persin and is, therefore, the most dangerous part of an Avocado.

9. Xylitol or Artificial Sweetener
Dogs are extremely sensitive to artificial sweetener called xylitol. Even a small amount can cause low blood sugar, seizures, liver failure, and even death. You need to be careful as the xylitol are usually found in sugar-free foods.

8. Cat Food
The old saying that what’s good for the goose is good for the gander is not always true with cat and dog. Cat’s food is high in protein and fat and If it is continuously consumed by dogs can cause stomach upset, obesity and even pancreatitis.

7. Alcohol
Alcoholic beverages are known to cause intoxication and dogs are not an exemption. In addition, alcohol may cause poor coordination, abnormal acidity, difficult breathing, it could be as bad as putting them in a coma or even death.

6. Milk & Dairy Products
Dogs do not have enough enzymes like lactase that can break down lactose in milk. Therefore, milk and dairy products can cause digestive problems and also trigger food allergies. However small consumption is not worth worrying about.

5. Chocolate
Chocolate might be yummy but not for dogs! it contains a stimulant known as theobromine and a bit of caffeine. This stimulant affect dog’s organs like guts, heart, kidney and central nervous system. The symptoms in dogs are vomiting, diarrhea, a spike in heartbeat, seizure, and hyperactivities. These symptoms might start manifesting after four to twenty-four hours of consumption. Although the amount of theobromine in the dog system and thus the symptoms depend on the quantity and the type of chocolate.

4. Macadamia Nuts
One of the many causes of weakness, depression, tremors, vomiting and increased body temperature in a dog is macadamia nuts. Within 12 hours of consumption the symptom can be popping out and this could last for 12 to 48 hours. it could also be lethal especially when ingested together with chocolate.

3. Grapes & Raisins
Grapes and raisins are injurious to dogs as this can cause kidney failure. It is not a matter of quantity as a small amount can make a dog ill. Even though it is still until unknown as to the toxic substance responsible there are stories of dogs dying from a small chunk of grapes and raisins and experts have likewise agreed that there is safe dosage.

2. Human Vitamins
Human vitamin contains 100% of the mineral recommended as a daily intake by a human. This could, however, cause an overdose in dogs. It is therefore not recommended to feed your dog with your vitamin supplement.

1. Raw Fish
Among the food poisoning in a dog is raw fish as they contain bacteria that could be toxic. More so, some fish do have a parasite that causes β€œfish disease” or β€œsalmon poisoning disease” the symptom of which are fever and enlarged lymph nodes. If you want to feed your dogs with fish, feed them cooked fish as the parasite must have been killed.

I travel to different parts of the world, hunting down and documenting the most unique food each country has to offer. If you see any factual food errors in my videos, please feel free to politely let me know in the comments. I’m a huge fan of trying different, interesting foods in each country. My show is from a Western point of view, but more importantly, MY point of view. It is not meant to offend any person or culture.

Don’t forget to subscribe to Best Ever Food Review Show, so we can connect through food and travel and become Bestys!
