The Top Signs & Symptoms of PRE-DIABETES! SugarMD

Health No Comments »

Prediabetes is the condition between insulin resistance and diabetes. You can still have pre-diabetic symptoms. Dr. Ergin(SugarMD) also discusses pre-diabetes treatment in this video. Metabolic syndrome/insulin resistance is a combination of metabolic derangements such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Insulin resistance eventually leads to a pre-diabetes state. So, when someone has prediabetes even an elevated amount of insulin cannot keep blood sugar levels at normal levels which can lead to pre-diabetic symptoms and may need pre-diabetes treatment early on. Metabolic syndrome finally develops when you have a combination of insulin resistance that results in high glucose, high blood pressure, and abnormal cholesterol.

Patients with insulin resistance and prediabetes are at increased risk of many other health problems. Below you will see a list of disorders associated with prediabetes and insulin resistance.

Coronary artery disease
Metabolic syndrome
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease
Certain obesity-related cancers

What should I do if I have pre-diabetes and what diet is best for prediabetes?
If you have pre-diabetes, metabolic syndrome or insulin resistance, make lifestyle changes. Do so to reduce the chance that you will get full-blown diabetes. Here are a few things you can do.

Lose weight โ€“ Losing 5 to 10 percent of your body weight can lower your risk a lot. If you weigh 180 pounds that means you should lose 9 to 18 pounds. If you weigh 160 pounds, that means you should lose 8 to 16 pounds.
Eat right โ€“ Choose a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and low-fat dairy products, but low in meats, sweets, and refined sugar. Stay away from sweet drinks, like soda and juice.
Exercise for 30 minutes a day โ€“ You don’t have to go to the gym or break a sweat to get a benefit. Walking, gardening, and dancing are all activities that can help.
Quit smoking โ€“ If you smoke, ask your doctor or nurse for advice on how to quit. People are much more likely to succeed if they have help and get medicines to help them quit.
If your doctor or nurse prescribed any medicines, take them every day, as directed. The most common medication that helps the prevention of diabetes is metformin. That goes for medicines to prevent diabetes, and for ones to lower blood pressure or cholesterol. People with pre-diabetes have a higher-than-average risk of heart attacks, strokes, and other problems, so those medicines are important.

Summary:
16. Excessive Urination/Urinating During the Night: Granted if you drink high amounts of water before you go to bed, there is a good chance youโ€™re waking up in the middle of the night to urinate. But if youโ€™re blood sugar level is too high, you could pick up a urinary tract infection which can result in excessive urinating.

15. Blurred Vision: Donโ€™t overreact and go buy a pair of glasses if you begin to have temporary blurred vision. In most cases itโ€™s high blood sugar, which causes the lens in the eyes to swell up.

14. Difficulty Concentrating: When the body is lacking insulin, itโ€™s unable to remove glucose from the bloodstream into the cells. This doesnโ€™t allow the body to properly function. This is why you feel tired and canโ€™t concentrate properly. High blood sugar levels can dehydrate you because the body is trying to remove excess glucose through urination.

13. Dry Mouth: Because of the high glucose levels in your blood and saliva, which are caused by high blood sugar levels, your mouth becomes dry.

12. Impotence: This issue which only refers to men, stems from problems that are caused by poor long-term blood sugar control. This damages the nerves and the blood vessels.

11. Recurrent Infections: There are several recurring infections that need to be monitored. Dysfunction of the thyroid, adrenal and pituitary glands. Also watch out for numerous diseases in the pancreas and severe increase in blood glucose.

10. Slow Healing Wounds: If you find that the smallest cuts and bruises are taking longer than usual to heal, high blood sugar levels could be the cause. It affects the nerves and can lead to poor blood circulation, making it tough for blood โ€“ need for skin repair โ€“ to reach the wounded area.

9. Stomach Problems: When you have high blood sugar levels, emptying the food from your stomach could be delayed. This can lead to bloating, distention, abdominal pain, nausea, or vomiting.

8. Constant Fatigue or Extreme Tiredness: If your thyroid level is low, there is a good chance you are going to feel tired, sleepy or depressed. In order to fight infections, it takes energy, which can result in constant fatigue and high blood sugar levels.

7. Thirst: When you have high blood sugar levels, your kidneys are forced to work overtime to filter and absorb the excess sugar. In order to achieve that, liquids need to flow through the body in order to urinate the sugar.

6. Dry and Itchy Skin: When there is poor blood circulation flow through the body, it causes itchy skin. The most common areas of the body that become itchiest are the lower parts of your legs.

5. Always Hungry: You may be one of those people that have a big appetite, and thatโ€™s fine. However, for people who normally do not have a large appetite, this could be because youโ€™re lacking a hormone called incretin. Incretin reduces the flow of sugar from the liver after consuming a meal. If you lack this hormone, food empties quicker and youโ€™ll be hungry again shortly after dinner, which increases your blood sugar level.

4. Excess Abdominal Weight/Fat: This is one of the most common signs that you have high blood sugar levels. The food that you have consumed was not all able to get into the cells as energy which would nourish the cells, so in turn, you feel hungry again.

3. Nerve Problems: Simply put, if your blood sugar levels are high, it can damage the blood vessels that carry oxygen and nutrients to the nerves, which can lead to nerve problems.

2. Skin Changes: If you begin to experience discoloration and certain growths on your skin, your blood sugar level may be high. Also, you may notice dark, thick areas of skin may begin to form on the back of your neck and your hands as well.

1. Tingling and Numbness: This goes hand-in-hand with nerve damage. If you experience tingling and numbness in certain areas of your body, your blood sugar level may be high. This type of nerve damage is called neuropathy.

Lee Health is a nationally recognized, award-winning health system in Southwest Florida. We are caring people, inspiring health.

The numbers are surely attention getting: nearly 7 million Americans have undiagnosed diabetes. What gets less notice are the early warning signs.

“If they’re not going to their doctor, if they’re not seeing their physician they’re not having those lab works, they’re not reporting their signs they could just be going along with their normal daily activities,” says Melanie Aracri, a certified diabetes educator for Lee Health.

All too often patients show up at a hospital in a health crisis and find out they have highly elevated blood sugar. New studies find 1 in 10 heart attack patients may have undetected diabetes. We’ve broken down 5 warnings signs that should get your attention.

“The three classic signs of high blood sugar, we call them the three “P”s: polyphagia, polydipsia, and polyuria. Those are increased thirst, increased hunger, and increased urination,” says Aracri.

It’s easy to minimize increased thirst, especially when it’s hot. And frequent urination seems to naturally follow. But experts say it could be our body’s way of flushing extra glucose.

“The kidney has to work really hard to get that blood sugar out, that blood glucose out when it’s high,” says Aracri.

Wounds that don’t heal could be another warning sign.

“The body’s not able to fight that infection because of that extra glucose in the system,” says Aracri.

Frequent yeast or urinary tract infections may also be a red flag many people fail to consider. The earlier diabetes is picked up, the easier it is to avoid complications.

“it’s a learning how to adapt your eating pattern, your meal plan to your lifelong activities and daily habits,” says Aracri.
